The Story Behind  The Erickson Name

"People do not come to therapy to change their past but their future."

- Milton Erickson

As a clinical psychologist, our founder, Dr. Marilyn Atkinson,  became a dedicated follower of Milton Erickson's work, giving his name to Erickson Coaching International because she believed in the power of his solution-focused, metaphorical mindset as a powerful means of human transformation.

Who was Milton Erickson?

Neuro-Linguistic programming (NLP) and the Solution-Focused Counseling approach grew out of a study by some of the most successful American therapists and leaders - one of whom was Milton Erickson.

His basic presuppositions that all behavior has a positive unconscious intent, and must be respected, caused a fundamental paradigm shift in modern psychotherapy.

Studies concerning which techniques work and how people change and heal inevitably led to a clear, higher-level understanding of how to catalyze healing. And this led to the development of NLP, one of the most powerful vehicles for change in existence.

To date, aspects of Erickson's legacy, Accelerated Learning Strategies and NLP have been integrated into some of the most advanced models in the human potential movement and psychotherapy arenas.
