Crossing the Bridge from Dreaming to Doing

written byTeresia LaRoqueon 12/04/2012

I was recently inspired by the commitment demonstrated by our nanny and thought I would share more on the power of commitment! Rose finally got her visa for her family to move from the Philippines to live with her in Canada. She has not seen her family in 3 years! When I asked her what keeps you going? She replied, “I made this sacrifice to be away from my children to not only ensure my immediate family has a better future but also for all the generations after them.” Wow! I was reminded of the level of courage, inner strength and commitment we have when we have a compelling vision.

“Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. It is the words that speak boldly of your intention, and the actions which speak louder than the words. It is making the time when there is none, coming through, time after time after time, year after year after year. Commitment is the stuff character is made of, the power to change the face of things. It is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

The topic of commitment was central to my very first coaching keynote speech over 15 years ago, and I still talk about it today. Why? Because this is the cornerstone of creating what we want in our lives!   When starting something new, or stepping up to a new level in life, the strength of our commitment can make all the difference between a mediocre showing and a truly remarkable achievement.

By definition, commitment is a pledge or promise, primarily to oneself (although it can also be to others). Commitment is the willingness to invest time and energy in something we really believe in – even when it’s really hard to do. Especially when it’s hard to do.

As I mentor coaches in turning their passion of coaching into a thriving business, I witness daily commitment in action. Whether it is recommitting to their dreams when they have lost sight of the vision, committing to stretching our of their comfort zone to seize an opportunity or committing to being vulnerable to get the support that will make the difference. One thing I know for sure is that making our dreams a reality starts with understanding our relationship with the word commitment.

Commitment is what carries us out of dreaming and into doing. It’s a force of will, directed by a vision and boosted by the power of deep caring. It’s how people get to the Olympics, or the top of Mount Everest, or their 50-year anniversary. It truly is a force to be reckoned with! So I strongly encourage you to embrace it, because it will serve you well on the entrepreneurial path.

  • What are YOU committed to?
  • What action are you taking to show your commitment?
  • What support do you have in your life to help you follow through?

I would love to hear what you are committing to! Post your commitment – making a public commitment also strengthens your commitment.
