Believe in Yourself and Your Value As A New Coach

The Value of Complimentary Sessions For New Coaches

I believe that the way to build your life and/or executive coaching business is to, as the saying goes, “Feel the fear and do it anyway”.

One of the biggest lessons I have learned over the past few months is that in order to build a successful business of any kind, you need to believe in yourself and your value as a coach. Many people are afraid to go ahead and build their business because they might fail, or they may make a mistake. I am a firm believer that there are no failures and there are no mistakes. It’s all about practice. If we look at it from that perspective, sometimes it’s easier to be able to let go of having to have it all work out perfectly.

For instance, when you set up an appointment for a complimentary session with a client, go into it with the idea of enrolling them into your program. If at the end of the session either of you decide that it is not a good fit for you, refer them on to another coach and then look at it as practice. When you reflect on the session, think about what you might have done differently. If you look at it that way, then the next complimentary session will be easier. You won’t be looking for what you might be doing wrong, but instead, you might look for a way to make that session have a different outcome. You might then look at the session as not only personal growth for your client, but also growth for you.

There will always be another complimentary session, and some clients will be a fit and others won’t. It’s better to say no to a client or have them say no to you when it is not a good fit, rather than to try and work with someone who does not fit. There is a coach out there for every type of client.

So here are the main points of my article:

  1. Book as many complimentary sessions as you can.
  2. If a session does not end in enrolling a client, then look at it as a growth opportunity for both of you.
  3. If either of you chooses not to work together there is probably a good reason for it. Some people come to us and are only interested in continuing to tell their story. They are actually not interested in doing the work.
  4. Always, always look at a complimentary session that didn’t have the outcome you wanted as a learning opportunity. It is your practice for the next session.
  5. Finally, have fun! Realize that with practice, you will continue to grow and evolve as a coach.
