Leadership Coaching: Real Life Application

Coaching Competencies Application: Improved Team Communication, Morale, and Retention.

Who:

A Supervisor working at a large utility company was experiencing communication issues on her team. She was in charge of supervising 12 team members, 9 of whom were tenured and 3 of the employees were new. The tenured employees were unwelcoming to the newer employees. When the newer team members would share innovative ideas, they were constantly told, "We don't do that here." The conflict was distinct and clear in both teams meeting and whilst team members were individually working, despite the fact that they were supposed to be working collaboratively on projects. The lack of communication resulted in team members not listening to each other and thus missing the opportunity to collaborate and create better results.

What:

Puzzled by what to do next, the supervisor began a 6 month coaching period with a certified coach. She began to open up about her situation and during her coaching period, she discovered new Solution-Focused ways to overcome the challenges she was facing. After numerous coaching sessions, the supervisor expressed to her coach that this was the first time that she felt heard. One of the action items of the items she set out to complete was sharing her story with her team, she titled it The Power of Being Heard. She proceeded to ask open-ended questions when communicating with her team to model her expectations. A team meeting was held where they brainstormed ways for better communication. A team charter was created to list their action items and agreed to hold each other accountable to their action items and deadlines.

Result:

The team started taking initiative by taking turns facilitating the team meetings. Small groups were created to ensure all team members were included on projects. A year later, the team was surveyed and results showed that team communication, team morale and employee retention had increased compared to a prior year's survey.
Additionally, team members also shared comments stating they felt they were more valued and felt they were now contributing more to their potential.

"Coaching Competencies for Leaders is a fabulous course that gives a basic overview of coaching techniques while honing in on the specifics from a leadership perspective.  This course has been extremely beneficial in teaching me the proper techniques to effectively communicate, ask powerful questions and listen.  I have been able to apply this practical knowledge immediately with my teams and leaders. In doing so, my leaders are feeling more empowered, have the space to come up with creative ideas and feel that they are valued.  In using the tools I have learned in CCL, my leaders feel more empowered, passionate and feel a sense of purpose."  - Melissa B
